We took a hike along the Rakaia Gorge Walkway on Monday. We completed the 10k hike which was classed online as ‘easy’. We’d say it was more like moderate. The 10k is a stretch of constant ups and downs (some steep) and changing ground. There are options for other places to stop and admire the views along the way without going all the way to the end. The Lower Gorge Lookout is an option to stop. But we pushed on to Higher Gorge which then loops back. We took a small detour on the way through lush woodland to see the old abandoned coal mines. Kitty had nodded off for half an hour by then. The woodland feels like a jungle with the tropical trees and exotic bird calls. It took us about 4.5 hours in total. It was just a pity the cloud has descended and covered the mountain range. Enjoy the pics!
Last week one evening Kitty ventured into the sea here for the first time. She’s been in the sea before elsewhere but the crashing waves and cold water here made her very wary. All it took was watching Katey learn to surf and she was so inspired she waded in up to her elbows fully clothed for a closer look.
